Contract Packing vs Private Label vs OEM — What's the Difference?
The three terms are often used interchangeably but they describe slightly different commercial models. Contract packing (co-packing) means you supply the brand/artwork; we supply the rice, the mill capacity, the packaging materials, and the regulatory compliance — and ship the finished goods to your warehouse. Private label typically refers to retail-channel arrangements where a retailer sells "their own brand" rice produced by a third-party manufacturer (essentially a sub-set of contract packing focused on retail). OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) is a more industrial term implying you may also specify the rice variety, milling parameters, packaging spec, and quality criteria — Lababdar offers all three models on the same operational backbone.
Whether you call it contract packing, private label or OEM, the practical workflow is the same: your brand, our mill, our regulatory paperwork, your shipment.

How the Contract Packing Workflow Works
The first engagement runs through five stages:
- Brief & spec — you share intended pack sizes, rice variety preferences, target retail/wholesale price, packaging type (BOPP, kraft, jute, vacuum), and projected monthly volume.
- Sample & artwork — we mill and pack a small dummy run with your artwork (or a placeholder if your design is in development) and ship 2–3 finished packs for your approval.
- Compliance setup — we register your brand with FSSAI on the pack (your FSSAI license + product manufacturing license + nutritional declaration), prepare the BIS/legal-metrology compliant pack copy, and get clearance for export markets if applicable.
- First production run — typically 2–10 MT depending on your target — milled, packed, palletised, dispatched on agreed terms.
- Repeat orders — second and subsequent orders skip steps 2–3, lead time drops to 7–14 days from PO.

Pack Sizes and Format Options
We pack in formats matching every channel:
- 1 kg vacuum-sealed BOPP — premium retail, e-commerce
- 5 kg laminated BOPP with carry handle — modern trade retail (supermarkets)
- 10 kg PP woven with handle — kirana stores and HoReCa
- 25 kg jute or PP woven — wholesale, B2B, food service
- 50 kg jute — institutional, export, mill-direct B2B
- Custom-format gift packs — for festival hampers, corporate gifting
Each format has different material, printing, and lead-time economics — we advise on the most efficient option for your target volume and channel.

Minimum Order Quantity (MOQ) — Realistic Numbers
MOQ depends on pack size and customisation: 1 kg vacuum packs — MOQ 5,000 packs (5 MT). 5 kg packs — MOQ 1,000 packs (5 MT). 25 kg jute — MOQ 200 bags (5 MT). 50 kg jute — MOQ 100 bags (5 MT). For first-time clients we sometimes accept smaller pilot runs (2–3 MT) at slightly higher per-kg rate, on the understanding that subsequent orders move to standard MOQ. We do not impose minimum order frequency — you order as your sales pipeline demands.

Artwork, Design and Pack Copy — Full Service Available
If you have an in-house design team, send us the print-ready artwork (PDF, AI, or PSD with bleed and crop marks). If you don't, our partner design studio can produce pack artwork for an additional fee — typically Rs 8,000–25,000 depending on complexity, including front, back, gusset, and legal copy. We also handle the legal-metrology compliant pack copy: net weight, MRP, batch number, manufacturing date, best-before, FSSAI license number, country of origin, allergen information, and any export-market specific labelling (Halal logo placement, EU nutrition table, USDA equivalents, etc.).

Quality Control — How We Protect Your Brand
Your brand on a pack of basmati that disappoints the customer is a brand-equity loss. We treat contract packing quality with the same rigour as our own brand: (1) NABL-accredited lab testing on every milling lot before packing; (2) visual quality inspection on every 100 packs randomly during production; (3) retention sample of every batch held for 12 months; (4) shipment-level quality certificate filed with your invoice; (5) 100% replacement policy on any quality issue raised within 30 days of delivery, no questions asked, no chargebacks.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do you sign an exclusivity agreement?
For specific recipe / formulation work or significant brand investment, yes — we sign category exclusivity in your sales geography. For standard contract packing of common basmati varieties, no.
How long does the first order take?
First-time order with new artwork typically 4–6 weeks from brief to dispatch. Repeat orders 7–14 days from PO.
Can you handle export-market packaging compliance?
Yes — we have done contract packing for buyers in UAE, Saudi, UK, Germany, Canada, Australia, Singapore. We handle market-specific labelling, language requirements, and certification artwork.
Who pays for packaging materials?
Packaging is included in the per-kg co-pack rate for standard sizes. For custom/printed bags above MOQ thresholds, you pay the bag-printing setup fee once (Rs 30,000–80,000) and per-kg rate covers the bags thereafter.
Do you handle pan-India distribution after packing?
We dispatch finished goods to your warehouse(s) of choice. Onward distribution to retail/wholesale outlets is your operation, but we can recommend logistics partners for new brands.
