Why FOB Mundra is the Default Export Route for Punjab Basmati

Mundra Port in Gujarat sits about 1,200 km by road from Punjab's rice belt — the shortest inland-truck distance to any Indian deep-sea port. For basmati rice exporters, this matters for three reasons: lower per-kg inland freight, lower fuel-surcharge volatility, and faster turnaround between paddy season harvest and container loading. Lababdar dispatches the majority of its 1121 Steam, 1121 Sella, Pusa, and Golden Sella container loads through Mundra because the math simply works in the buyer's favour.

Mundra is also one of the most agri-friendly ports in India — dedicated grain terminals, on-site fumigation chambers, well-organised customs clearance for HS code 1006.30.20 (basmati rice), and excellent shipping line presence (Maersk, MSC, Hapag-Lloyd, COSCO and CMA CGM all call regularly). When you book FOB Mundra with Lababdar, you inherit all of that operational efficiency.

When to Choose Pipavav Instead

Pipavav, also in Gujarat (about 90 km south-east of Diu, in the Saurashtra peninsula), is APM Terminals' flagship Indian port and offers a different value proposition. For East Africa lanes (Mombasa, Dar es Salaam, Djibouti), USA East Coast (New York, Norfolk, Savannah), and parts of South-East Asia (Singapore transhipment to onward ports), Pipavav often gives 5–8% lower sea freight than Mundra and noticeably shorter port-side wait times during peak basmati export months (October to February).

If your buyer is in Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Ethiopia, USA East Coast, or you're feeding a Singapore-based regional distribution hub, Pipavav is usually the right choice. For Middle East destinations (UAE, Saudi, Iran, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Bahrain) and for EU Mediterranean ports (Genoa, Barcelona, Marseille), Mundra is typically faster.

How Our FOB Quote is Built

An FOB Mundra or FOB Pipavav quote from Lababdar contains no hidden line items. The price you see breaks down clearly into:

  1. EXW rice cost — variety, grade, % broken, % moisture, crop year, milling style
  2. Packaging — bag material (jute, PP, BOPP, kraft), printing, weight, lining
  3. Inland freight — Punjab mill to Mundra/Pipavav port (truck rate per MT)
  4. Fumigation — methyl bromide or aluminium phosphide (per container)
  5. Port handling — terminal handling charge (THC), stuffing labour, lashing
  6. Documentation — phytosanitary, certificate of origin, fumigation cert, B/L issuance

The quote is fixed for 7–14 days from issue date, locking in your landed cost while you finalise your end-buyer agreement. After your PO and advance payment, the rate is locked for the full container regardless of paddy market moves.

Container Loading Process at Mundra and Pipavav

Once your PO and advance are received, the timeline is roughly:

Day 1–7: Paddy procurement, milling to your spec, in-house lab QC, packaging.
Day 8–10: Loading on trucks, GPS-tracked transit Punjab → Mundra/Pipavav.
Day 11–13: Arrival at port, container booking confirmed, fumigation chamber slot booked.
Day 14–15: Container picked from yard, taken to fumigation point, fumigated for the required hours.
Day 16: Stuffing — 25 kg or 50 kg bags hand-loaded with proper layering, dunnage, and silica sachets if required. Container is sealed in your buyer's presence (or our agent's on your behalf), and stuffing photos are emailed within 24 hours.
Day 17–18: Customs clearance, port-side inspection, B/L issuance.
Day 18–25: Vessel cut-off, container loaded onboard, vessel sails. Telex release or original B/L sent on payment of balance.

Quality Assurance for FOB Buyers

For an FOB buyer, the moment of risk is when the container leaves your supplier's control and is sealed at port. Lababdar mitigates this risk in three ways: (a) a sealed retention sample of the exact lot that loaded into your container is held in our Punjab lab for 12 months — so any future quality dispute can be resolved against an identical sample; (b) stuffing photos and a video walk-through of the container interior are emailed before B/L issuance; (c) third-party pre-shipment inspection by SGS, Cotecna, or Intertek is available on buyer's instruction (cost typically USD 350–550 per container depending on inspector and port).

Frequently Imported Varieties via Mundra and Pipavav

The most-shipped basmati varieties from our Lababdar export desk are:

  • 1121 Steam Basmati — flagship export grade, 8.30+ mm raw length, premium for GCC and EU.
  • 1121 Sella (Parboiled) Basmati — strong demand in Iran, Iraq, Saudi, Yemen.
  • 1121 Golden Sella — golden hue, popular in EU restaurant supply chains.
  • Pusa Steam — value-grade premium, popular in UAE retail and EU private label.
  • Sharbati Steam — entry-grade aromatic for African and Middle East distributors.

All five varieties are available year-round in container quantities, with peak inventory October to March (post-paddy harvest).
